Besides the standard slotted box, resellers often ask about boxes that close without tape: a single blank folds around the product and locks shut with interlocking flaps. In the FEFCO catalogue this family carries codes starting with 04, and 0427 is one of its common members. The same idea, in a flatter version, is often sold as a “cardboard envelope” or “corrugated mailer”. This article explains the difference and where each style fits.
What FEFCO 0427 means
FEFCO codes starting with 02 describe slotted boxes assembled from four flaps on top and four on the bottom, closed with tape (see FEFCO 0201 vs 0203). Codes starting with 04 describe one-piece folder-type boxes: a single blank is wrapped around the product, and the ends are closed with flaps that tuck into each other rather than with tape or glue. 0427 is one style within this family, generally known in the trade as a tape-free or self-locking mailer box.
Why e-commerce fulfilment likes tape-free mailers
A box that locks shut without a taping machine is quicker to close by hand and easier to build into a semi-automated packing line. It ships and stores as a flat blank like any other corrugated box, and it works well for goods that do not need the extra top-and-bottom protection of an overlapping style like 0203. That combination is why the style is common in e-commerce fulfilment, especially for lighter and flatter items.
Cardboard envelopes and other names
For flat goods, books, documents, folders, apparel or small electronics, a flatter version of the same tuck-and-lock idea is commonly sold as a cardboard envelope, corrugated mailer or book mailer. There is no single name used across the industry, so when you enquire, describe the product and its flatness rather than relying on the name alone, and we confirm which structure matches it.
0427 compared with 0201 and 0203
0201 and 0203 close with tape and are a sound default for general and heavier goods, because they need the least complex tooling (see FEFCO 0201 vs 0203). A tape-free 0427-style box trades that simplicity for faster, tape-free assembly, which suits flatter or lighter e-commerce items. Because its flaps are a shaped cut, it needs a cutting die: see our article on die-cut corrugated boxes for what that involves.
What we already produce for e-commerce
Our confirmed e-commerce line uses a crash-lock bottom, which snaps together without folding or taping, closed on top with tape and a tear strip for easy opening: see e-commerce boxes with crash-lock bottom, tape and a tear strip. It shares the same goal as a 0427-style mailer, quick assembly with less manual folding, and for many e-commerce shipments it is the practical option. Tell us your product and we confirm whether that line or a specific FEFCO style fits better.
Before you order
Check the board grade against the weight of the goods; we offer 3-, 5- and 7-layer board (see how to choose corrugated boxes in bulk). Give us the size using internal or external dimensions, and confirm with us whether the style you have in mind needs a cutting die.
How to order
Send us the FEFCO code or describe the box, together with the size, the weight of the goods and the quantity. The minimum order is one pallet. Read the guide to buying cardboard boxes from Poland and our wholesale terms, and send your enquiry through our home page.
Frequently asked questions
What is FEFCO 0427?
It is a one-piece box from the FEFCO 04 group of folder-type styles. Instead of flaps closed with tape, the ends are closed with tuck-in flaps that interlock, which is why this family is often called tape-free or self-locking.
Is a “cardboard envelope” the same as FEFCO 0427?
For flat products, suppliers often sell a flatter version of the same tape-free, interlocking idea under names like cardboard envelope, corrugated mailer or book mailer. The naming varies, so describe the product and we confirm the right structure.
Does this style need a cutting die?
Usually yes, because the interlocking flaps are a shaped cut, not a straight one. Unlike the standard FEFCO 0201, this style is not normally available as a short run without tooling; see our article on die-cut boxes for what a cutting die involves.
Do you produce FEFCO 0427 or mailer-style boxes?
We produce boxes to the customer’s dimensions, with a minimum order of one pallet. Send us the FEFCO code or a description together with the sizes and weight of the goods, and we confirm the structure and tooling needed.
