A die-cut box is a corrugated box that is cut and creased with a purpose-made cutting die instead of being made from straight slots and folds. That freedom of shape is what allows a box to close without tape, open with a tear strip, hold a product in place or show it through a window. This article explains when a die-cut box is worth choosing instead of a standard flap box, which FEFCO styles are normally die-cut, which features you can build in, and what to send us to get a quote.

Die-cut box or standard flap box?
A standard flap box (FEFCO 0201) is made from a straight-cut blank with only slots and creases. It is the most economical and flexible construction and is the right choice for most goods. Choose a die-cut box when:
- the box should close without tape, with a tuck-in lid or locking tabs,
- you need a specific shape, cut-outs, a window, or handle and vent holes,
- the product has to be held in place by an insert or divider,
- packing speed matters, for example a crash-lock bottom for e-commerce,
- presentation is part of the product: unboxing, gift or retail packaging.
A cutting die is a tool made of steel rules mounted in a board, which cuts and creases the whole flat shape in one stroke. It has a set-up cost, so it pays off when the volume is large enough or when the design cannot be made another way. For long, unusual or large-format boxes in short runs we can instead make boxes to size without cutting dies on Boxmaker and Autobox machines: see short runs without tooling costs.
From idea to series: how a die-cut project runs
- Brief: dimensions and weight of the product, the way it is transported (parcel, pallet, export), storage and stacking conditions, printing and finishing, expected quantity.
- Structural design: a FEFCO style or a custom structure is chosen and drawn as a flat layout (dieline) with cut and crease lines.
- Mock-up: before series production a physical trial model can be made in cooperation with proven partners, so you can check the fit, the closing and the packing process.
- Approval and series: after approval the series is produced in 3-, 5- or 7-ply board. Boxes are delivered flat, on pallets.

FEFCO styles that are usually die-cut
FEFCO is the international catalogue of corrugated box designs. Most codes outside the 02xx series of slotted boxes need a die. The groups below are the ones customers ask for most often. The exact construction always depends on the drawing.
04xx: folder-type boxes and trays
One-piece boxes formed from a single flat blank. FEFCO 0426 has a lid that tucks into the front and is the classic pizza-box style. FEFCO 0427 adds locking tabs to the lid and is the typical mailer box. Both close without tape and fold quickly, so they are used for e-commerce, retail, gifts and bakery products.
03xx: telescope-type boxes
Two-part boxes with a separate lid and base. The double wall at the overlap makes them good for stacking and for products whose height varies. Simple rectangular versions can be made without a die, while versions with special corners or joints need one.
05xx: slide-type boxes
A tray that slides into a sleeve, like a drawer. They give a premium unboxing effect and suit cosmetics, small electronics and sample kits.
07xx: ready-glued boxes
Boxes glued at the factory and delivered flat, which pop into shape when opened. FEFCO 0711 and 0713 are typical crash-lock styles with an automatic bottom, widely used in e-commerce packing.
09xx: interior fittings
Inserts, dividers and pads that hold the product in place. They are almost always die-cut. See corrugated inserts, dividers and protection systems.
Features you can build in
- Self-locking closure: tuck-in lids and locking tabs replace tape, which saves material and looks neat.
- Adhesive strip and return strip: the adhesive strip closes the box without tape, and a second strip can be added to streamline returns.
- Tear strip: the customer opens the parcel without a knife, which prevents damage to the goods.
- Crash-lock bottom: glued at 4 points, it forms in one smooth motion when the box is opened, which drastically reduces packing time. See e-commerce boxes with crash-lock bottom, adhesive strip and tear strip.
- Windows and cut-outs: a foil window shows the product directly, for example toys or textiles.
- Handle and vent holes: possible wherever the die allows them. Tell us the purpose and we will propose the construction.
- Inserts and dividers: cut to the shape of the product and combined with other cushioning materials through trusted partners if needed.

Print and finishing
Die-cut boxes are often consumer-facing, so graphics matter. For larger runs we print flexographically in up to 4 colours. For short and medium runs, digital printing (UV and pigment) is done straight from digital files, without the cost of plates. For a premium look, corrugated board can be laminated with printed paper of offset quality, and gold or silver metallic print and varnish are available. Read more: premium packaging finishing.

Where die-cut boxes are used
- E-commerce: mailer boxes, boxes with adhesive and tear strips, crash-lock cartons and boxes matched to parcel-locker compartments (boxes for parcel lockers).
- Retail and gifts: cosmetics, electronics, toys and gift sets, often with an insert and a window.
- Food service: pizza and takeaway boxes. Food-contact requirements must be checked for the specific product and material.
- Displays: shelf-ready packaging and countertop displays that are opened along perforations.
- Promotional and subscription boxes: constructions that present the product as the customer opens the box.
- Heavy and large items: die-cut parts inside large boxes, see 7-ply and heavy-duty packaging.
Board, size and order terms
Die-cut boxes are made from 3-, 5- or 7-ply corrugated board, in formats up to 10 m × 3 m. We hold FSC certification. The minimum wholesale order is one pallet. We deliver by freight forwarder, or you can organise your own transport, and we can produce samples. Price and currency are agreed per order. Reseller terms are described on the wholesale page.

What to send us
- the FEFCO code, or a drawing or dieline if you have one,
- internal dimensions and the weight of the packed product,
- the board you prefer (3-, 5- or 7-ply) or the transport conditions,
- printing and finishing requirements,
- the quantity per size and whether you need a mock-up first.
Send your enquiry through the form on our home page and we will propose a construction and prepare an offer. If you resell packaging, read our guide to buying cardboard boxes from Poland and how to choose corrugated boxes in bulk.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a cutting die for every custom box?
No. Long, unusual or large-format boxes that are made from straight cuts and creases can be produced in short runs without cutting dies. A die is needed for constructions such as tuck-in or locking lids, cut-outs, windows and crash-lock bottoms.
Can I see a physical mock-up before ordering a series?
Yes. Before series production we make physical mock-ups in cooperation with proven partners, and samples are available, so you can check the fit, the closing and the print.
Which print and finishing options are available for die-cut boxes?
Flexographic printing in up to 4 colours, digital UV and pigment printing, laminated boxes with offset-quality printed paper, gold and silver metallic print and varnish.
What is the minimum order?
The minimum wholesale order is one pallet. Details are agreed per specification.
