From Idea to Mock-Up: How Packaging Prototyping Works

From Idea to Mock-Up: How Packaging Prototyping Works

A box that does not fit the product or the way it travels is expensive, and you learn it only after the series is made. A mock-up moves that discovery to the beginning. Here is how the process works.

Step 1: the brief

Collect the dimensions and weight of the product, the way it is transported (parcel, pallet or export), stacking and storage conditions, any print or branding requirements and the expected quantity.

Step 2: structural and graphic design

The construction of the box is matched to the product, its weight and the form of transport. The graphic layout follows the brand vision of your customer.

Step 3: the physical mock-up

Before series production a physical trial model is made, in cooperation with proven partners. Nothing is left to the imagination: you hold the box in your hands.

Step 4: the packing test

Pack the real product. Check how it sits, how the box closes, how it stacks and how it is handled. If something is wrong, the design is corrected while the change is still cheap.

Step 5: approval and series

After approval the series goes into production, with board in 3, 5 or 7 plies and flexographic (up to 4 colours) or digital print where needed.
